Tatsuro Yamashita – Your Eyes

The 1980s were a good time for Japan, so it’s no surprise that the music of the time reflected that. The recent development of portable car stereos and the Sony Walkman debuted in 1979, made it possible to take music anywhere. Tatsurō Yamashita is one of the most famous musicians as pioneer of the style of Japanese Adult-oriented Rock dubbed “City Pop”. Many people considered city pop as cheesy, disposable music, going so far as calling it Shitty Pop, or “shitī poppu” is a loosely defined subset of pop music that originated in Japan in the late 1970s. It was originally termed as Japan’s Western-influenced “new music”, but came to include a wide range of styles associated with AOR, soft rock, R&B, and funk. It was also associated with new emerging technologies, such as various electronic musical instruments. Yamashita produced the majority of his city pop music during the 1970s–1980s and is considered the King of the Genre. He collaborated with his wife Mariya Takeuchi, another city pop singer. As a solo artist, Yamashita has released 17 studio albums, 2 live albums, multiple compilations and over 40 singles. He has been one of the most commercially successful Japanese male solo recording artists in the history of the J-Album Chart. “Your Eyes” gives us another West Coast smooth music connection, with American lyricist Alan O’Day who wrote songs for the Righteous Brothers and Helen Reddy in the early of the decade. City Pop, genre musik yg menarik karena mencampur bermacam gaya seperti jazz, funk, disco, soft rock, bahkan ethnik. Disebut pula sbg Adult Oriented Rock yg dipelopori oleh Steely Dan, Airplay hingga Toto, dalam versi Jepang. Namun City Pop bukan hanya musik semata, melainkan gaya hidup saat menikmati modernisasi ala dunia barat namun dgn teknologi made in Japan seperti penemuan Walkman, portabel Nakamichi untuk mobil, nintendo, hingga perangkat Midi. Maka jika ada oknum yg bilang anti musik, sebetulnya bukan larangan Tuhan, tapi akibat gak mampu bikin apapun. Atau dia kelamaan berjemur di sawah saat City Pop meledak di awal 80an. Referensi menyebut Mariya Takeuchi dgn Plastic Love sbg tokoh penting, tapi publik perlu simak pula Miki Matsubara lewat Stay With Me, serta vokal Taeko Ohnuki dan Junko Ohashi. Ketika artis Sakura menyerbu Indonesia di akhir 70an lewat Mayumi Itsuwa hingga Oshin, langsung disusul demam City Pop lewat virus Casiopea serta Tatsuro Yamashita. Termasuk kiblat para band fusion Karimata, Krakatau, Emerald hingga Modulus yg berorientasi pada Yamaha Music Contest, sejatinya membidik City Pop karena prospek menghasilkan fulus juga reputasi. Agaknya setelah 30an tahun mati suri, aroma “Shitī Poppu” mulai marak lagi termasuk di Indonesia akibat youtube.
