Eumir Deodato

deodatoThis is one of my landmark song which bursting with fresh, innovative sounds and ideas. Whether it is an orchestra re-interpretation of classical themes with outrageous jazz-funk licks, this anthem so rocks. One of those that added jazz to my musical enthusiasms when Deodato came out while I was teens in junior high school around 70s. His excellent solos on Fender-Rhodes are great, the beat is heavy and funky since I heard the surprise success of Also Sprach Zarathrustra on Prelude’s album. Quickly follow with his second project Deodato 2 that closely followed the template of his first gig. Deodato knew there was a lot of money to be made courting the rock audience, and little on this record could safely be called Jazz. So these two records still stands up remarkably well now. Rhapsody In Blue get revisionist treatment and provide a nice contrast to one another. It was also used in Pontiac commercials during 70s. One of Gershwin’s masterpiece becomes hot and spicy with funky electric piano and heavy bass flourishes. It’s real gems of Deodato, I probably appealed to Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire fans originally will find favor with the club scene today.

Termasuk video tentang “bujang lapuk” (a lonely bachelor), jadi terbayang komposisi Rhapsody In Blue karya George Gershwin yg diadaptasi Deodato. Nama aneh di kuping mereka yg gak bisa bedain kaliber Robert Plant dgn Ed Sheeran, apalagi bagi generasi jaman now yg gak peduli Michael Jackson dgn Michael Learn to Rock.
1. Komposer Gershwin asli berkulit putih. Namun sering melahirkan karya yg lekat dgn etnis kulit hitam, seperti Porgy and Bess, Summertime, dll. Meski Rhapsody In Blue gak ada kaitan dgn isu rasial, tapi kuterjemahkan sbg “hubungan gelap” dua insan. Dapat bermakna akibat beda agama, beda marga (seperti Romeo and Juliet), tentu saja rasis sesuai konteks Gershwin. Pada video ini si lelaki sbg korban cinta “beda kasta”.
2. Eumir Deodato mungkin gak populer di Indonesia, padahal doi digelar Dewa Jazz di Brazil. Terkenal setelah menggubah karya klasik menjadi aroma Jazz, seperti komposisi Also Sprach Zarathustra (Richard Strauss) yg sering kudengar di TVRI 70an. Selanjutnya Deodato sering tampil diiringi orkestra kumplit, namun hebatnya pula tetap megah saat tampil bertiga saja. Begitulah nikmatnya Jazz, selain faktor improvisasi juga team-work yg solid. Deodato juga sukses saat mendampingi Al Jarreau hingga Michael Franks.
3. Pada bagian bridge video, bisa simak “pertempuran panjang dan dalam” antara menit ke 02.22 hingga 3.33. Itulah terjemahan animasi “perang tatapan” antara si bujang lapuk versus perempuan, diiringi gempuran drum seolah debar asmara sbg rapsodi biru. (nDy)
